The Rural Journalists Association of Tanzania (RUJAT) is a professional, member-based organization dedicated to advancing quality journalism in rural communities across Tanzania. Established in 2020 by a group of 20 committed journalists, RUJAT has grown into a vibrant national network with over 120 members working across regions to amplify underreported voices and stories.

Who We Are
RUJAT brings together journalists, media practitioners, and communicators who are passionate about rural development and inclusive storytelling. The association was founded on the belief that rural communities deserve accurate, timely, and impactful information that reflects their realities and supports sustainable development.

To promote ethical, inclusive, and impactful journalism that highlights rural development issues and empowers communities through information.

A Tanzania where rural voices are heard, valued, and influence national development through strong, independent media.

What We Do
RUJAT focuses on strengthening journalism in rural areas through:

Capacity Building: Training journalists on reporting key development issues such as agriculture, health, climate change, water and sanitation, and economic empowerment.

Content Production: Supporting the creation of high-quality stories, radio programs, and multimedia content that reflect rural realities.

Advocacy: Promoting press freedom, access to information, and gender equality in media representation.

Networking: Creating platforms for collaboration among journalists, media houses, civil society, and development partners.

Awards & Recognition: Establishing platforms to recognize excellence in rural journalism, including reporting on critical issues such as universal health coverage, insurance, agribusiness, and community development.

Our Impact
Since its establishment, RUJAT has contributed to increased visibility of rural issues in national discourse. Through its members, the association has helped highlight challenges and opportunities in underserved communities, influencing policy dialogue and community engagement.
