Founder’s Inspiration Statement

The establishment of the Rural Journalists Association of Tanzania (RUJAT) was inspired by the vision and experiences of its founding Chairman, now Executive Secretary, Mr. Prosper Laurent Kwigize.

“RUJAT was born from a simple belief: rural voices matter. When journalists unite to tell these stories, they don’t just inform them, they drive change.”

After gaining professional exposure through international engagements in countries including India, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda, Australia, Kenya, the Netherlands, and Germany, Mr. Kwigize observed a common and powerful trend: rural communities were given deliberate attention and priority in the media landscape. In many of these countries, journalists not only operated within mainstream professional bodies but had also formed dedicated associations focused specifically on rural journalism.

These associations served as platforms for collaboration, professional accountability, and skills development. They empowered journalists economically, strengthened ethical standards through peer support, and most importantly ensured that the voices, ideas, and concerns of rural communities were effectively represented. Through such structures, journalism became a bridge between rural and urban populations, amplifying citizen perspectives and channeling them to policymakers and decision-makers.

Recognizing that this approach was largely absent in Tanzania, Mr. Kwigize saw an opportunity to introduce a new model of journalism that prioritizes rural issues. At the time, many journalists were unfamiliar with the concept and importance of a specialized rural journalists’ association. This required deliberate efforts to raise awareness and build understanding around the value of unity, collaboration, and focused reporting on rural development.

Driven by this vision, Mr. Kwigize led efforts to educate and mobilize journalists to come together under a shared purpose: to report on issues that matter most to the public especially those in rural areas. This included highlighting both opportunities and challenges, while promoting solution-oriented journalism through writing, publishing, and broadcasting.

RUJAT was therefore founded not only as a professional body but as a transformative platform—one that strengthens journalism, empowers communities, and ensures that rural voices play a central role in shaping Tanzania’s development agenda.
